As parents, sometimes we push our children to take vitamins so that they are not susceptible to disease. They can take fish oil to maintain health. But what is the fish oil? Fish oil is oil derived from the tissues of oily fish. It is recommended for a healthy diet because it contains the omega-3 fatty acids, Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), precursors to eicosanoids that reduce inflammation throughout the body.

There are many benefits from fish oil, and that is why I recommend you and your family to intake it. EPA and DHA are useful for brain health, better eyesight and ensure the proper functioning of our nervous system. The omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce the fatty deposits in the arteries. Research also shown that taking fish oil everyday can prevent heart disease; reduce the risk of various cancers like colon, breast and prostate cancer; help depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and ADHD; very effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis , systemic lupus, and many other conditions of inflammation.

Then if you’ve bought it, there are several ways that you have to do to get fish oil conditions remain good to eat. Fish oil capsules should be refrigerated at the time of purchase and move straight into your refrigerator as soon as you get home. Keep the oil in the dark, the capsules should come in opaque bottles. At the very least, the bottles should be dark glass or plastic. This prevents exposure to bright light, which can hasten spoilage. And above I have mentioned benefits of fish oil that really useful for our health, so do not hesitate to consume for our health and families.

By Dr. Sandi Smith, Director of Institutional Relations, Global Learning Semesters, January 2009.

The number of U.S. students studying abroad seems to be increasing significantly on an annual basis. Although there is not adequate research to understand why… the anecdotal evidence would suggest that this generation of “Millenial” students realize the primary need of understanding others that are different than themselves to achieve success in business, politics, and general global welfare.

The 2008 IIE Open Doors Report suggests that in 2006-2007, study abroad by U.S. college students increased by 8% from the previous year and an increase of close to 150% since 1996-1997 (source: http://opendoors.iienetwork.org/?p=131592). The IIE Open Doors Report has been the primary source of data for international education enrollments in the U.S. for several decades. However, it is not clear that the significant increase in study abroad participation data is not merely a result of better data collection and reporting efforts in the last decade.

The Open Doors Report 2008 also suggests that U.S. college students are participating in programs in much more diverse geographic locations, seeing reporting increases in study abroad destinations. “The number of U.S. students studying in China, Argentina, South Africa, Ecuador and India each increased by more than 20 percent over the previous year.” (source: http://opendoors.iienetwork.org/?p=131592).

However, the 2008 Open Doors Report shows insignificant participation in Cyprus. Why should a U.S. college student explore Cyprus as a relevant and meaningful destination for study abroad?

So, if participation in study abroad is increasing, and students are increasingly seeking out “non-traditional” locations, why do so few U.S. college students study abroad in Cyprus? Unofficial reports would suggest that prior to 2005, fewer than five (5) U.S. college students studied abroad in Cyprus every year.

We can only speculate as to why Cyprus has not previously been a common study abroad location for U.S. students. But some of the main speculations include:

1. few Americans know much about Cyprus

2. because the first language in Cyprus is Greek, many American students and Study Abroad Advisors might incorrectly assume that unless students are fluent in Modern Greek language, they would not be able to study at a Cypriot institution of higher education

3. there are very few colleges and universities in Cyprus

4. Cypriot institutions have not promoted themselves to the American study abroad market

5. because Cyprus is a bi-communal society divided by a United Nations demilitarized zone, some people may think Cyprus is a dangerous location

6. because Cyprus is so close to the “Middle East” some people may think that it is an Arab nation and/or may have security issues related to “Middle Eastern” countries

It does not require a sophisticated investigation to learn that most of these supposed obstacles to study abroad in Cyprus should not be obstacles at all.

I’d like to look at the potential for U.S. college students to study abroad in Cyprus and discuss the relevance of students and Study Abroad Advisors exploring Cyprus as a relevant and meaningful study abroad destination.

First of all, let’s look at those perceived obstacles to study abroad in Cyprus.

1. Few Americans know much about Cyprus.

- so what!?!?!?!? Let’s learn!

- most that do know about Cyprus, love it

- Cyprus is a modern, thriving EU (European Union) country and should be known by Americans

2. Because the first language in Cyprus is Greek, many American students and Study Abroad Advisors might incorrectly assume that unless students are fluent in Modern Greek language, they would not be able to study at a Cypriot institution of higher education.

- yes, the official language of Cyprus is Greek, but most of the population is multi-lingual and English is commonly spoken as a second language

- the University of Nicosia uses English as the official language (expect in the School of Education) of instruction and administration

- non-Greek speaking students can easily navigate the university, the community and travel throughout Cyprus in English only

3. There are very few colleges and universities in Cyprus

- until 2008, there was only one (1) university in Cyprus

- in 2008, four private colleges where awarded university-level status by the Ministry of Education

- The University of Nicosia was established over 25 years ago on the U.S. higher education structure and functions academically and administratively parallel to most U.S. universities.

4. Cypriot institutions have not promoted themselves to the American study abroad market.

- until 2004 when the University of Nicosia (formerly Intercollege) developed Global Learning Semesters as an organization to serve as the international marketing and U.S. student support for Intercollege, there was very little promotion of Cypriot higher education to the U.S. college student market

- Global Learning Semesters now supports hundreds of U.S. college students studying at the University of Nicosia annually.

5. Because Cyprus is a bi-communal society divided by a United Nations demilitarized zone, some people may think Cyprus is a dangerous location.

- Cyprus is a democratically stable nation, thriving member of the European Union, and has not experienced any violence related to the bi-communal status since 1974.

- An ideal learning laboratory for students, the bi-communal status of Cyprus is great place for students to learn about international relations, active UN negotiations, and ethnic/national divisions in a stable, non-violent society.

6. Because Cyprus is so close to the “Middle East” some people may think that it is an Arab nation and/or may have security issues related to “Middle Eastern” countries.

- situated in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is a close ally, neighbor and friend of Greece

- Cyprus is considered a “Christian” nation with the majority of Cypriots observing Orthodox Christianity

- in geographic proximity, Cyprus is closer to Israel, Egypt and Turkey than it is to it’s Western European counterparts

- politically, economically, and internationally… Cyprus is a member of the European Union and thus functions as a thriving European society

- culturally… Cyprus has a long and diverse history of living in the cross-roads of European, Middle Eastern, and North African civilizations, and thus benefits from a culturally diverse perspective and exposes the average U.S. student to a Mediterranean cross-roads not seen in much of the common destinations Americans gather

Next, let’s look at some of the important factors any student should consider when choosing a relevant study abroad program.

1. What are the academic options available?

2. Can I earn academic credit that will add to my degree plan?

3. Do I meet the eligibility requirements of the program?

4. Will the cultural experience be relevant to my academic, personal and career goals?

5. Do the student support services meet my needs?

6. Can I afford it?

Academic Options in Cyprus

About UNic: The University of Nicosia is an independent, co-educational, equal opportunity tertiary education institution, combining the best elements in western education, quality standards and an international philosophy.

Located in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, an island which lies at the cross-roads of three continents, the University has quickly become a global education centre. International in philosophy, the University hosts students from all over the world, in a multicultural learning environment, promoting friendship, cooperation and understanding.

The University pursues excellence in education through high teaching standards, in a continually improving academic environment. Besides classroom instruction, the University offers students opportunities to become involved in a whole range of activities including student clubs, sports, public lectures and seminars.

The University is actively involved in European and local research projects as a partner and as a coordinating institution. Additionally, the University of Nicosia received approval for an Erasmus University Charter and is an official participant in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The University of Nicosia is also actively involved in the community with campaigns for various causes, including environmental protection. In recognition of this work the institution received the prestigious “Global 500” award from the United Nations. Other examples of community service include campaigns for fighting world hunger and raising funds for worthy causes. In an ongoing project, professors help prison inmates acquire knowledge and skills in Computing, Art and Psychology.

Academic tradition encourages the majority of the world’s universities to adopt the name of the city which hosts them. Indeed, this occurs almost as a rule when the city in question happens to be the capital city. The University of Nicosia is proud of the ties and status which its name conveys. To this end, the University is committed to maintaining its position at the forefront of education, research and social service; in line with the enduring motto of the institution: “Excellence in Education”. (source: http://www.unic.ac.cy/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=5205&tt=graphic&lang=l1)

U.S. Study Abroad students can take courses in almost every academic department (except Education, as it is taught in Greek).

School of Business: Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Management, Marketing, Hospitality Management, Hotel and Tourism Management, Sports Management

School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Law: Applied Multimedia, Architecture, Communications, Language and Literature, Graphic Communications, Interior Design, International Relations, Law, Psychology, Public Relations & Advertising

School of Sciences: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Nursing

Academic credit

Study Abroad programs at the University of Nicosia are for-credit programs that are consistent with United States standards of university-level academic work.

Study Abroad is a large investment of time and money for most of you. Make sure that you take the right steps to earn academic credit at your home institution for your study abroad experience.

All of our instructional work is conducted by qualified faculty and the University of Nicosia is fully-accredited. Upon successful completion of your study abroad program, you will receive an official transcript directly from the University of Nicosia.

Though our programs distinguish themselves through their combination of travel and academics, we do not grant credit for academic or co-curricular travel. You will still be enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Nicosia.

It is important that you understand Transfer Credit Process at your home college/university to ensure that you can take the right steps to earn transfer credit.

Courses at the University of Nicosia function on semesters, contact hours, academic rigor, grading, and evaluation methods standard in most U.S. colleges and universities. The transcript is issued in English, thus there are no translation issues for the students’ home school.

Eligibility requirements

Because the University of Nicosia conducts all business and classroom instruction (expect in School of Education) in English, students do not need foreign language proficiency to study abroad in Cyprus. Likewise, because much of the population of Cyprus is fluent in English, it is easy to navigate Cyprus in English only.

Will the cultural experience be relevant to my academic, personal and career goals?

Nicosia (sounds like nik-oh-see ya), the capital of Cyprus is a modern European city. Those who have traveled to Europe previously will find Nicosia and most of Cyprus very familiar. Those who have not traveled to Europe will get a “scaled down” perspective of Europe as a very historical region of the world and also a modern and dynamically growing society.

U.S. students participating in a study abroad program at the University of Nicosia through Global Learning Semesters will attend classes with approximately 4,000 local Cypriot students and 1,000 international students. Students will live in apartments among the residential neighborhood surrounding the University campus in Nicosia.

Again, Cyprus is a small nation, not too overwhelming from U.S. students even from non-metropolitan communities, thus students do not need to be travel savvy to make the most of immersing themselves in the community.

Cyprus is a fascinatingly historical country and provides meaningful hands-on experiences for those interested in international relations, international business, history, management, economics, and other humanities and social sciences.

Student support services

U.S. students participating in a study abroad program at the University of Nicosia will experience premium student support services designed for the characteristics of U.S. study abroad students and strategically provides the level of support necessary to make even the first time international traveler and the muli-country travel savvy student comfortable, yet challenged to develop intercultural competencies.

Global Learning Semesters provides comprehensive student support services, including pre-departure and on-site orientation, 24/7 local staff support, emergency response, strategic co-curricular field trips and activities, housing, academic and personal support. A member of NAFSA and the Forum on Education Abroad, Global Learning Semesters has become one of the premier study abroad program providers to U.S. college students.

Yes, Cyprus is an academically and culturally relevant location for U.S. college students to study abroad for the summer, semester or full-year.

A Masters in education can be a great degree for any teacher to consider going for. It can also be easily coupled with a teaching fellowship program. Although hands on approaches are usually best with education, a person can also pursue a Masters in education without the intention of teaching.

Many teachers enter into a school with a degree in something like math or science and a degree in education. There are many benefits however to getting a Masters in education. Many teachers are even offered incentives from their school system. A teacher may receive better pay or better benefits. They may even be able to qualify for different jobs or be able to offer different classes. There are many innovative ways to teach your classic subjects. An English and a history teacher may choose to make a class that incorporates the two subjects. Many subjects have over lap and making an innovative and special class can be just the way to grab students’ attention. It can also help a student to get into a better college if admissions see that they took part in a special class.

A Masters in education is also well combined with a teaching fellowship. While a student is taking classes on education, they also usually need a number of hours actually teaching. A teaching fellowship allows these students to work as teaching assistants to professors while they are getting their Masters in education. As they advance in their classes they can also end up in charge of teaching entry-level courses. A teaching fellowship offers many great things for students aside from just practical experience. Teaching fellowships open doors and let students meet a great many people. These people can be perspective employers. Also it helps students to build their CV. This is important because it is a person’s resume when applying for teaching positions.

Some people are only interested in the academic aspects of a Masters in education. There are many people who are interested in diversifying their portfolios. People often elect to take classes as pass/fail or even just to sit in on class lectures. Sometimes when a student pursues a certain degree, it includes many of the requirements of another. A person who is pursuing a Masters in child psychology may have many classes in common with a person pursuing a degree in teaching children with disabilities. A psychologist may have no interest in getting any experience in teaching a class. They may only want to take the classes on education and can then get their Masters in education. Although most degree programs do require a certain amount of teaching, a psychology student may be able to use their psych labs as their hours teaching.

In 1988, legendary Tiger Claw master Wai Hong decided that Chinese martial arts needed a shot of publicity. He organized the first Kung Fu Master Exhibition in Chinatown, NYC. It was an afternoon of martial art education as a number of masters demonstrated with their students. Here Eagle Claw master Leung Shum, Northern Praying Mantis master Anthony Chuy and the late Shing-Yi master Kenny Gong talk to us and show their stuff.
Help answer the question about Masters in Education
Can you get a masters in education without any teaching experience?
I have a bachelors in economics, but would like to earn a masters in education.
REVOLUTION AND EVOLUTION IN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

BY PROF.M.S.RAO, ACADEMIC GUIDE, ICFAI UNIVERSITY, INDIA

“ Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it”, Martin Wright Edelman.

WHAT IS EDUCATION AND SOCIETY:

Education provides the man with information, imagination, knowledge, ideas, values, ethics, reasoning and over all makes the man complete man. Education brings refinement, adds to intelligence, and makes independent and confident man. It is only the human beings who can get armed and equipped with education, which is missing in animals. Education does not mean only reading and writing but also thinking, learning, reasoning, practical experiences and so on. Education is a learning process from cradle to grave. It is education that has brought out many changes in this world and transformed the entire civilization since time immemorial. Ariel and Will Durant quoted, “Education is the transmission of civilization”.

The growth of society solely depends on the type of educational system adopted. Education makes tremendous impact on the society. The quality of the society depends on the quality of educational system implemented. Some one correctly said, “Better institutions are essential if we are to lead better lives”. Right education makes the people build character, values, ethics, and prepares the society and country as a whole to catch up with the rest of the world. Right education is the legacy or the gift, which we pass on to our next generations. George Peabody said, “Education: a debt due from present to future generations”.

EFFECTS OF EDUCATION ON SOCIETY:

Kerala is the first state in India, which attained cent per cent literacy. It encouraged other states to contribute their best so as to attain total literacy. Rather Kerala has become a model state and ideal state to be emulated by the rest of the country in providing importance to education.

No nation can develop without proper education. And India too developed as a society and as a nation for the last 60 years. India has now vast human resources and it has the thirst highest technical manpower in the world. Although the effects of education in the society are tremendous, yet there are grey areas, which needs to be addressed. India as a nation has developed politically, culturally, economically and socially but yet much needs to be focussed in a right direction.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, said Nelson Mandela. It is very obvious that no weapon is superior to education. Apart from education, the influence of technology has brought out significant changes in the society. If technology is used in the right direction and if it is coupled with education, we can expect miracles in the society as a whole.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

“Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get if you don’t”, said Pete Seeger. All human beings make many mistakes resulting in bitter and, of course, experience. If an individual is educated, he knows the things because he reads the fine print. He tends to make a few mistakes in his life. Where as if an individual is not educated he tends to make more mistakes because he does not know the fine print. An uneducated individual believes in trial or error method. If he succeeds in his trial, he pursues or else he drops. The uneducated man mostly believes in observation and practical knowledge. The success rate is far higher in educated man rather in an uneducated man. Education brings down the complexities in one’s life thereby making life easier, simpler and comfortable. John Dewey rightly said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself”.

PROBLEMS IN PRESENT EDUCATION:

India is the second largest populated country in the world and unfortunately it is nowhere near in number qualitatively. It may be again due to huge population and the type of administrative and political system we have. There is stress on cramming, memory and mugging up. One who mugs up and puts in examination paper is treated as a meritorious candidate. It does not encourage imagination, creativity and originality. There is no effective emphasis on practical aspects of life. It is mostly beset with theoretical aspects and concepts, which any one can read even without going to institutions.

School children are loaded with many books and they find it highly stressful. Education, in fact, should be filled with entertainment and fun so that student can discover the joy of learning, which is missing now. Children find it horrible to go to schools because of too much of study. Even at home children engage themselves so much on school homework. Such things do not promote the relations between parent and child at home. Inadequate infrastructure and inexperienced teaching staff are another bane. Unfortunately, in India, both the primary and secondary level education is still struggling to survive qualitatively. The views and opinions of the students are not being respected. Students are always imposed whatever is there in the textbooks resulting in lack of imagination and innovation. R W Emerson rightly said, “The secret in education lies in respecting the student”. Only when students are respected and valued, they will try to think creatively, innovatively and out of the box. Students should be provided with more freedom of thought.

It is very unfortunate that the teachers are not paid handsomely. Best brains are pursuing other careers for monetary benefits and for better prospectus. It is a pity that those who stick to teaching profession either due to their aptitude and taste and temperament towards teaching or because there is no other alternative (TINA factor) career.

Pandit Nehru’s policies and Kothari commission have brought some significant changes in the education but still there is no healthy and constructive impact. There is commercialization of education, and a few fly by night operators entered into this sacred field and spoiled the standards.

TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES TO OVERCOME:

Teaching faculty must undergo regular training to update and upgrade their skills and abilities. Encouraging regular workshops or seminars or courses related to teaching methodologies can enhance and sharpen their skills. Such seminars will encourage the teaching faculty to exchange and gather more information.

“He who opens a school door, closes a prison”, Victor Hugo. Children from the age of 6 to 14 are to be admitted in schools to provide education, as this is the best age to tune them for creating interest in education. Child labor has been abolished but unfortunately it is not enforced effectively. Children should be encouraged by various innovative ways and means to get into educational institutions.

Content and curriculum in the educational system needs to be addressed. Streamlining the educational system on national basis from Kashmir to Kanyakumari will raise the educational standards. There are disparities in the educational system in various states and efforts must be made to fill those gaps.

Govt. levies 2 per cent educational cess and authorities must ensure that the funds go in a right direction to create strong educational infrastructure. Nobody is against the levy of 2 per cent cess but the right application and mobilization of the resources will bring right results rapidly.

Focussing more on vocational education is the need of the hour. Presently there is a vast gap between industry and academics. Infosys has come out with ‘Campus Connect’ initiative to bridge the gap between the industry and academics and it is a step in right direction. The corporate leaders have a vital role in funding the educational system. They make money for themselves, pay handsome salaries to their employees and paying dividends to their shareholders and all the people who are involved in the business are earning one way or the other. But what are they contributing for the education and society? It is a well admitted fact that the helping hands are far better than praying lips. Corporate, whether big or small, can wholeheartedly come forward to contribute their best for bringing Indian educational system on par with global standards.

It is essential to bring reforms in education from time to time as the tools and techniques involved in teaching are changing rapidly due to the influence of technology.

For professional qualifications like engineering, management, medicine, computers etc., the students should be engaged in the practical education and project works from the first year itself. Such activities will build more confidence in the minds of the students as they grasp the needs of the industry and thereby fine-tuning as per the industry expectations. Fee structure needs to be rationalized and the deserving students should be provided with scholarships.

Providing interest free educational loans will help the deserving and poor students. Also, it is desirable to encourage non-professional degree holders to get vocationalized. “Education is not filling a pail, but the lighting of a fire”, said William Butler Yeats. Education must ignite the minds of the students and it must move the students from comfort zone to effective zone. The students in the comfort zone will not achieve as much as that of in effective zone.

CONCLUSION:

There is a strong need to streamline the present educational system. The problems in the educational system need to be addressed immediately. Education should focus on ethical, social, vocational and academic aspects. Education builds man and man in turn builds nation. A strong nation can be built only when there is a strong character education. Abraham Lincoln aptly said, “Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing”. Hence the essence of any education is the strong character. The evolutionary approaches and revolutionary changes in the present educational system are the need of the hour. We must build a nation where youngsters have a vision to think beyond their geographical boundaries. There should be scope for the students to expand intellect, reinforce mind and make them to stand on their own feet.

MESSAGE:

Education and character are two sides of the same coin and one without the other is meaningless. Money may come and go but it is the character that counts from beginning to the end of life. Any individual when equipped with character education can excel in any part of the world. To put it in the words of Martin Luther King Jr. “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically . . . . . intelligence plus character . . .. That is the goal of true education”.

Some educators who are dedicated to excellence in education and devotion to their school, students, and community wish to advance their teaching career and take that next step toward becoming a principal. However, returning to a traditional educational setting in order to reach this goal may not always be easy for some teachers. There are some alternatives to the path of principal licensure. The University of Cincinnati offers a Masters of Education for obtaining your principal licensure that is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) that can be completed online in as little as two years.

The Master of Education In Educational Leadership program, which work in cooperation with the standards of performance developed by the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC), is designed to give students the tools necessary to go into administrative roles such as directors, principals, and administrative coordinators in both public and private schools. Your program will begin with Foundations of Educational Administration I & II and as you work towards the completion of the online degree program you will have the opportunity to develop an electronic portfolio that will keep track of your work as you move through the degree program. During your final year of the program (the last four quarters) you will also have an opportunity to complete a Planned Field Experience to help you see the practical applications of what you have learned while working under the guidance of a licensed administrator. In total, the Master of Education in Educational Leadership will include 50 credits of course work plus 4 additional credits for the planned field experiences. The Master of Education in Educational Leadership will give you a very strong foundation in both academic and applied principles to give you the tools and confidence that you need to play an effective role in leading students to meet the high standards demanded by today’s increasingly competitive world.

At the University of Cincinnati your graduate degree is reasonably priced at $404 per credit hour for Ohio residents, and $414 for students who are not residents of the state of Ohio, plus fees and supplies. Since the Master of Education in Educational Leadership is an accredited degree program, you may be eligible for financial aid or student loans that will help you to cover the costs of your degree. The University of Cincinnati has enrollment advisors that can help you in finding out what aid you may qualify for and assist you in obtaining the necessary paper work to apply. Admissions to the Master of Education in Educational Excellence program requires the standard items such as a transcript of undergraduate work, a resume, letters of reference that have been sealed and dated, and a written statement of your personal and professional goals. Additional applicants must submit recent GRE scores (taken within the past 5 years) and have a GPA of at least 2.8 out of the 4.0 scale. The application fee is $40 and there are additional requirements for international students.

With the online degree program from the University of Cincinnati there is nothing holding you back from achieving your career goals.

There are many high-quality daycare centers throughout the Dallas-Ft.Worth area where creative daily programs are being implemented. The most significant difference between those programs and the Castle Montessori Schools is that Castle Montessori Schools follow a single, time-tested, proven philosophy of child development and education.

At Castle Montessori Schools the Montessori method is used as a complete and integrated approach to childhood education based on the life work of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori method often causes confusion or misunderstanding among parents and the founders and faculty of Castle Montessori are on a mission to provide a clear understanding of Montessori education to parents.

Dr. Montessori possessed incredible insight, and her scientific observations of child development have proven accurate both over the years and around the globe. In keeping with her observations and insights, Castle Montessori programs nurture the true potential of each child in carefully prepared classrooms with a full complement of specialized learning materials which simply do not exist in most daycare settings. Parents seeking a Castle Montessori education for their child will quickly notice the schools offer an individualized program, geared to the child’s natural interests.

“Many daycares teach concepts in a group setting, using a teacher-driven model to determine which concepts will be taught. We however, espouse a very different approach. The Montessori method encourages the child to choose for himself which concepts he will explore, and provides materials to assist him in his individual exploration of those concepts,” said Varsha Patel, Castle Montessori Founder and Head of School.

All good centers provide opportunities for children to learn the rudimentary concepts of counting, colors and the letters of the alphabet. A Castle Montessori environment allows a child to discover the foundations of reading, writing and arithmetic, and so much more. A child at Castle Montessori is exposed to concepts of zoology, botany, geometry, geography, algebra, history, science, chemistry, biology, art appreciation and expression, and music, all at a level that is inviting, approachable and understandable to the young child. In addition to the academic opportunities in the Castle Montessori classroom, children are encouraged to participate in daily activities such as preparing food, washing dishes, mopping floors and dusting shelves. Children experience the self worth that comes from being a meaningful and contributing member of the classroom community.

Patel said the schools’ teachers or Guides, as they are called, observe and facilitate each child’s discoveries during their educational journey. Patel sees the program foster a deep sense of independence in children. This autonomy leads to intentional learning through use of the materials and social interactions with both adults and other children.

“By design our schools do more than care for young children until they are old enough for kindergarten. We have created a program that not only meets the physical and emotional needs of a young child, but is also specifically designed to meet the educational and social needs of the whole person during the formative years of childhood.”

Patel agrees with Dr. Montessori’s assessment of the value in providing an early education for children. “The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when man’s intelligence itself, his greatest implement is being formed,” Montessori wrote.

According to Patel, respect is a very important part of a Castle Montessori education. The faculty and staff model respect in a number of ways. Respect for the child’s desire and capacity to learn is demonstrated by filling the room with beautiful and well maintained materials. Real, child-sized items are used in place of plastic replicas. The adults show respect to the children by treating them with kindness, while firmly expecting appropriate behavior. The children are given many opportunities to practice the skills necessary to show respect through caring for the room and the materials in it, and treating one another with kindness and respect.

“During the daily work time, a child may not become involved with another child or his work, unless she is invited to do so. Each child is free to work with any material (at her ability level and once it has been introduced by the teacher), but she must treat it carefully and return it to it’s proper place on the shelf ready for the next person when she is finished, ” Patel said.

Children have the opportunity to learn by working alone, in a small group, or by observing others as they work.

Younger children look to the older children as models of social courtesy, and someone other than the Guide to whom they can turn to for help with their work. The older children feel a sense of responsibility for the younger children, and solidify newly acquired skills when they help younger children just beginning to learn those skills.

In addition, Patel said the older children learn to be patient and tolerant of others, especially as the younger children learn accepted social behaviors. This also fosters leadership skills in the older children at such a young age.

“They are often so good at buffering hurt feelings or helping a new child become adjusted to school. Older children really love to share what they know with the younger ones, and by doing so reinforce their learning, and by watching the older children work, the young ones are challenged and look forward to their future work activities,” Patel said.

Patel said she is thrilled that parents and children have found each Castle Montessori School to be a beautiful landmark in their respective communities.

“While the beauty of our school buildings in themselves is certainly nice to enjoy and my husband Vikas and I spent countless hours in the design of the buildings, we are even more thrilled with the investment we have made in our teaching staff. Our teachers have earned their certification by passing rigorous exams and working under the tutelage of experts in the field. The AMI and AMS training programs are both year long programs, similar to a state teaching credential program. In addition to practicums on the presentation of the many specialized materials used in the Montessori classroom, student teachers are trained in child development, learning theory, and language acquisition. Before being certified as an AMS/AMI teacher, applicants must both observe and student-teach under a qualified Montessori Guide.”

In staffing each school, Patel has sought out teachers with more than just the right credentials and experience. Each teacher must have passion and commitment to the full development of each child.

Patel loves the fact that Castle Montessori teachers exhibit patience, a sense of humor, and a wide variety of interests which she believes give them a right perspective of their work and allow them to further supplement their student’s lives.

All Castle Montessori Schools have an open door policy with parents and encourage parent involvement. Visitors are welcomed for school tours daily with or without an appointment. For more information visit www.CastleMontessori.com

- so what?

- Global Learning Semesters (www.GlobalSemesters.com) now supports hundreds of U.S. college students studying at the University of Nicosia annually.

- culturally, Cyprus has a long and diverse history of living in the cross-roads of European, Middle Eastern, and North African civilizations, and thus benefits from a culturally diverse perspective and exposes the average U.S. student to a Mediterranean cross-roads not seen in much of the common destinations Americans gather

In recognition of this work the institution received the prestigious “Global 500″ award from the United Nations.

(source: http://www.unic.ac.cy/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=5205&tt=graphic<=l1)

U.S. students participating in a study abroad program at the University of Nicosia will experience premium student support services, designed for the characteristics of U.S. study abroad students and strategically provides the level of support necessary to make even the first time international traveler and the multi-country travel savvy student comfortable, yet challenged to develop intercultural competencies.

Yes, Cyprus is an academically and culturally relevant location for U.S. college students to study abroad for the summer, semester or full-year

I'm generally good at bantering, but I find it confusing/difficult when I have to talk about my work experience.

How should I study my resume to prepare for such open-ended questions as "Why did you decide to get into such and such area" or "Tell me about your experiences with such and such"

Should I write a short exposition for each bullet point, and study that? I heard rote memorization is not the right way to study for an interview.

I’ve just come home from the outstanding NC State shoot at Hunters Pointe where Chuck Frazier perpetrated on us some of his best, most well thought out target presentations. Standing in the box, I distinctly remember telling myself not to shoot that target right there. Did I remember to follow those instructions? Actually, to tell you the truth, well, I just forgot. It looked so good right there I couldn’t help myself. See, here’s what happened. After stomping the first bird, I moved the gun to intercept the second bird. And there it was, right on schedule. So I mosey up to it with my “never-fail” move and watched myself shoot right over the top of it! Chuck ambushed me. Twice! X0X0. It’s enough to make a person feel daffy. I did adjust the last 2 pairs, XXXX. Couldn’t get those lost birds back though.

And that’s what I want to take a look at, minimizing our misses.

In my opinion, sporting clays competition has become a precision sport. Never before have so many demands been placed on the competitor’s shoulders to guide the gun properly. Mistakes in the swing are rarely forgiven by today’s more creative and deceptive match presentations. While ours is not a game of perfect, scores are climbing. That’s why knowing where we missed and why is so critical. As scores continue to climb, there is less and less margin for missing, putting the emphasis squarely on better strategies and error free swing execution. Miss management.

Top shooters have good form. While their shooting styles may differ, the style each one uses is consistent, making it dependable, at the target and on the score sheet. But there’s more going on there than meets the eye.

Let’s start with a target presentation you like, a favorite of yours. Maybe it’s a left to right crossing target, medium speed at about 25 yards. This is a target that you rarely miss. Confidence on this bird is very high as you walk into the shooting box. Why? Because you know this shot. From the set up through the break you know every aspect of this shot cold. Swing feel and sight pictures are very familiar to you. I’m not inferring you can take the target for granted. I am saying you feel very secure, putting a lot of trust in your move on this bird. You know how to break it and it will break. So it’s safe to say you have this shot, any time, anywhere.

Now stand beside me at Hunters Pointe on Sunday at the state shoot, 15 yards to the left and under the 60 foot tower. Both traps are on the top. True pairs, the birds leave from behind us, on our right, overhead and away. The first thing we notice is the line on each bird is somewhat awkward, so putting the gun on the line will be touchy. To compound matters, the targets are fast, meaning time is limited and we’ll have to make good use of the time we have. The margin for swing errors is small indeed and swing mistakes, careless or otherwise, won’t be forgiven here. Like so many of Chuck’s well thought out presentations, precision will be at a premium……

Sporting clays continues to be an elegant sport born of long tradition, fulfilling our wingshooting passion to experience the wing and shot. Feather and clay, inescapably tied, grants us so many learning opportunities to hone our skills, a path of personal growth that affords us a refreshing, unbiased look at ourselves. Time and again, my students have learned how entirely more capable they are than once thought. The American sporting clays shooter can honestly and proudly say, in a very short period, he has indeed advanced to take his rightful place among the best in the world. And, let’s not forget, no one is having more fun out here than you and I are.

The events, times, places and persons in my articles are all true. While I changed a name here and there, 100% of the information came from my experiences with you. Each tournament, each lesson, each experience with you generated the material for my work. I am grateful.

We hope you enjoyed the first part of the article and will visit us online to browse the numerous collection that is available. Until then, happy Sporting!
